He credits Skins co-creator Bryan Elsley for nurturing his fledgling talent, setting him up to follow in the footsteps of fellow successful Skins alumni Nicholas Hoult and Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel .

‘Bryan wanted the show to feel like the Manchester United Academy when Scholes, Beckham and Giggs were there,’ he says.

To look the part he had to train three times a week with former European champion Errol Christie and do 30 minutes of skipping each night to enable him to pull off an astonishing skipping monologue in character.

‘I was so scared with Sucker Punch because I had to lose so much weight – three stone in three months,’ says Kaluuya.

‘I did enjoy it but it was hard work – boxers are the fittest people on Earth. It’s still there.’ The boxing training proved redundant for his role in the forthcoming Johnny English movie.
